Bartending Employment

Tending bar is more than just a job. It’s a profession that’s gaining respect and recognition around the world. The last few years have seen the public’s opinion of bartending rise. It’s no longer considered a part time job, or a temporary job. Bartending used to be thought of as something to do to earn money while you were either going to school or looking for something better.

This change in attitude has enabled some very skilled, professional bartenders to take pride in a job that was, for so long, looked down upon.

Tending bar is a fun job and can be very much like an adventure. It’s like going to a party every time you go to work. There’s always new people to meet and old friends to get together with. Skilled bartenders are in such demand and the job possibilities are almost endless. The employment opportunities can take you to some of the most exciting places in the world. It’s almost like being on a constant holiday.

But bartending isn’t always all fun and games. It does require skill. A good memory is essential. You have to remember what ingredients make up hundreds if not thousands of drinks. And even more importantly for the finances, a good bartender should remember the names, faces and drinks of most of their regular customers. It also takes coordination to move quick enough to keep up with the orders without dropping or spilling things. A bartender that constantly drops bottles or spills liquor everywhere will soon be an unemployed bartender.

Also it’s not always easy to maintain a smiling, cheerful attitude. But that attitude is as necessary as the skill in mixing and pouring a drink. Customers don’t want to look at someone that appears to have as many troubles as they do. Most people drink in a bar for pleasant conversation and a good time. They want and expect to see a smiling face making their drinks. The words from the old song “quick with a joke and the light of a smoke” still apply to today’s bartenders.

In 1997 I was living in the Ukrainian Village exactly two blocks away from Tuman's, back when it was known - rightly so - as the "alcohol abuse center." $2 Guinness and $3 martinis meant that you could walk in with $10 and leave three sheets to the wind, with change in your pocket for tacos.
